EPA Press Release:Jessica Greathouse
Sixteen facilities in 11 counties were cited by the West Virginia Department of
Environmental Protection for failing to monitor for leaks on their underground storage tanks.
Three of the gasoline outlets were in Calhoun County. All were fined $500 each and required to provide proof of the installation, testing
and proper operation of their leak detection systems.
"Implementing a leak detection system for underground storage tanks is a requirement of the
law," said Gil Sattler, underground storage tank program manager. "Leak detection helps
protect the environment from soil and groundwater contamination and is a safeguard of human
health."
The underground storage tank program regulates tanks and attached piping that contains
petroleum and hazardous substances. USTs are required to be routinely monitored for releases,
to have corrosion protection, spill and overfill protection, and insurance to cover the costs
of any release that may occur. Those who perform work on USTs are also required to be
certified by the UST program.
Environmental inspectors with the Division of Water and Waste Management perform inspections
on operating USTs, installations, closure, and removal of USTs, and respond to and investigate
possible releases from the tanks.
