Verizon West Virginia is giving the state $15 million dollars to develop a high-tech mapping of every address in the state.
The project could be part of the answer to the completion of the E-911 mapping and addressing in Calhoun. The county has
all the E-911 equipment installed, but has been at a standstill regarding the final phase which provides pin-point location of
the caller.
The state's 911 program has also called on a slow-down of the addressing and mapping systems, expressing concern they
are not uniform. A few counties have already completed systems, but most are still waiting for guidance or funding to make
their E-911 systems fully operational.
The project funded by Verizon will combine aerial photos with the latest computer technology to draw an extremely detailed
rendering of the state.
Governor Wise says such a map will help 911 operators direct emergency responders to exact addresses. Because of its
rural nature, many residences now list their addresses as a rural route number.
Wise says the mapping will also help with infrastructure projects, economic development and even tourism.
An eleven-member board will oversee the mapping project in the state. It is expected to be completed by April 2007.
