Bob Weaver Sept. 1, 2024
Facing numerous challenges over the years, the Hur Herald kicks off its 29th year, starting in 1996 with hard copies and then going to the Internet, discontinuing news coverage in 2021, but still continuing to do people and history stories, plus the massive archives.
Albeit, the interest in history is at an all-time low.
The early edition said it was "A cheap, often unedited and sometimes misspelled epistle with shaky financial backing and poorly defined goals."
Personally, I can't imagine the fortitude to keep it going.
Certainly a goal was to record the life and times of backwoods Calhoun County for 25 years and
to assemble a historical collection about the county, thousands of people and history tales, thousands of photographs.
At one time the Herald had 40,000-50,000 distinct readers, mostly across America, while many were former citizens of the Mountain State, many were not, just folks who like to read about life in the backwoods.
That readership began to fade drastically with the coming of social media, where each social media user was their own writer, editor and publisher.
Currently we are seeking donations to keep the Herald going. Accessing the Internet with traditional satellite systems continues to be haphazard and expensive.
Since the Herald no longer has a business license, donations to Bob Weaver, 7697 Pine Creek Road, Mt. Zion WV 26151.
