A little known physician sprung from the Calhoun backwoods to go on to a longtime practice at Cairo, Ritchie County WV.
Dr. Ulyssess Simpson Grant Ferrell (1865-1946) attended public school in Calhoun and graduated from the Baltimore University of Medicine, receiving a Doctor of Medicine in 1893.
He commenced practice at Burning Springs, Wirt County, having married Elizabeth Wirt Roberts of that county in 1896.
Shortly he moved to Cairo, Ritchie County, in 1898, where he remained in with a large and successful practice for 40 years.
Dr. Ferrell was a member of the Ohio Valley Medical Association and the West Virginia Medical Association. He is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.
He was the son of Franklin and Susanna Webb Ferrell of Calhoun.
