WV consumers will be paying a little less for fizzy sweet water beverages if Gov. Jim Justice approves a legislative bill, while the state ranks among the worst for diabetes and obesity, and also ranks relatively high with cardio-vascular disease.

The lobbyist said it was a good thing.
âRepealing the beverage tax is a win for West Virginiaâs working families, small businesses and the state economy. Itâs also a win for our stateâs medical schools by guaranteeing a steady source of revenue for WVU that was included in the beverage tax and directing new revenue to Marshall and the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine â all without increasing existing taxes,â explained Jennifer Richmond, Chair of West Virginia Beverage Association.
âThis tax has raised prices on hundreds of everyday beverages for 71 years, putting local businesses at a competitive disadvantage by encouraging residents to shop across state lines.â
