CRESTON NEWS

The Creston sing scheduled for April 12 was cancelled so that folks could attend the Jessica Lynch family benefit at Camp Barbe.

Speaking of Jessica Lynch, local residents, as is the case in most of the country, are elated that she was rescued from the torture chamber in the Iraqi "hospital". The Iraqi nationals who assisted in saving Mayberry Run's most famous citizen show that most citizens of that unfortunate country are decent folks, especially when they have half a chance. There were many prayers asking God to intervene and there have been many thanks returned for the miracle.

Folks from all over can relate to the Lynch family. Our local congresswoman noted that she appreciated being hugged by folks who didn't tower over her and folks all over the country have "adopted" their own little sister. Perry Williams of Douglasville Georgia has established a website in her honor.

The national and international media have been so thick that there have been traffic jams. Some had cultural shock problems in what they call "fly over country" with no cell phone service, no fast food eateries, etc. While many local residents were on Tee Vee, etc. one should never forget that the local area has a heroine and she should be the news, not the bit players.

Those who oppose America (and in the not so recent past called for the violent overthrow of the government) continue to harp on the progress of the war, Sec. Rumsfield's brilliance, etc. and call for dialogue, diplomacy and such and U N intervention, especially after the conclusion of hostilities. Some national politicians fear that victory will spell their personal political doom. One would be presidential candidate said that American troops targeted women and children in Iraq.

The comments of this columnist have come under fire. The terms racist and ignorant have been applied. Mr. Ben Mita and Mrs. Patsy Buvoltz wrote letters of protest. It seems Mr. Mita feels that The Creston News should be censored. One is put to mind when Adolph Hitler, who was Saddam's idol, had the books burned to be sure that the truth, or at least opposing views were not available. Sorta like the liberal media elite before Fox News, The Washington Times and the internet came along. The liberal elites were the ones who suggested that poor whites and disadvantaged members of other races were expendable. One only has to remember that Paula Jones didn't deserve fair treatment because she was, according to James Carville, "trailer park trash". This column only mentioned what was stated elsewhere -sorry about the offence.

Mrs. Buvoltz noted that the view expressed in the column was not cultured, educated, sophisticated and refined as was she. Thus the pro war people were ignorant and had no regard for women and children. In the current engagement it is clear that Saddam's crew had his own people killed to blame America (the sophistication of our air war in unreal as one can watch night after night of bombing and the lights stay on, traffic continues to flow, etc.). Sec. Rumsfield and President Bush were not the ones who had a pregnant woman go to a check point to blow up the soldiers with a car bomb.

It would be well to remember that America did not start this war. Those who blew up the Oklahoma City federal building [with its day care facility], TWA flight 800, the World Trade Center in 1993 and again on September 11, 2001 couldn't care less about women and children. It also seems clear that Jessica Lynch was tortured, etc.

One other matter is clear. The terrorists in Tehran, Pyongyang, Damascus, the "West Bank" and the Gaza strip are watching and now realize that the sad situation that happened in Mogadishu was history and not the future. Terrorist wannabees will think long and hard before they fool with America. There are those who respect only force and a willingness to use it on them.

Harley Lockhart, age 72, passed away in a rest home. He was a native of Burning Springs Run.

The tent caterpillars are eating the leaves on wild cherry and domestic fruit trees.

Debbie Griffin celebrated her birthday by, among other things, calling on Millstone and Mill Seat Runs.

The spring ephemerals are up, folks are mowing their lawns and still cleaning up from the ice storm.

Nancy and Jane Engelke motored to Fairmont for a Miss West Virginia preliminary contest.

Jane, Anna, Nancy Engelke, Keith Collins and a number of other Wirt residents attended the play Chicago and dined at the Windmill, a fancy Parkersburg eatery.

Mr. and Mrs. Billy Butler were calling at the Rev. S. E. Cooper, Jr. residence. Rev. Cooper is recuperating from his hip problems.

Work continues at the Creston Community Building with scraping and painting of "the little room". The flag pole is ready to be erected and the floor at the kitchen door was fixed.

Local residents are working on the details for the big ATV poker run scheduled for April 26.

The government decreed fast time started and several local biological clocks are fouled up.

Eastern American's deep well near Big Otter was down in the 6500' range. They had been having lost circulation problems and were contemplating running pipe.
