"Well, lookie here, youngins...we got company! Come on in, take your shoes
off and set a spell. We're the Mountain Women and we're just brimmin' with
homespun tales 'specially fer you..."
Suzi "Mama" Whaples and Carrie Newman welcomed visitors to the
Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center yesterday to spin a few mountain stories,
often bringing laughs and sometimes bringing tears.
An audience member said "I've haven't laughed so hard since I went to see
Bill Cosby."
The "Mountain Women" are professional storytellers and humorists from
West Virginia, and they shared their talents with visitors at the annual open
house "Spring Fling" at the center.
The women are national award winning artists, who weave storytelling from
a tapestry of Appalachian experience, having appeared in performances in
more than a dozen states. The duo also facilitates workshops for writers,
storytellers and performers.
They have more than 30 years experience in working with children and
adults. Combined with their love of people is their love for mountain
heritage.
The event was sponsored by Lights On!
