More than 500 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in West Virginia, according to the latest data update from the state, as active cases pass 11,000, straining some that are at capacity.
Calhoun has 18 new cases since last Friday, some of those reportedly in intensive care, with unconfirmed reports saying people being infected from law enforcement, Calhoun School families, younger individuals and retirees.
Added to nine cases from last week, there appears to be at least 27 active cases.
The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources report 511 are hospitalized with COVID, including 171 in intensive care and 74 on ventilators.
Calhoun Schools issued a quarantine for 50 students and a mask mandate starting August 30.
As of Wednesday, the state had 11,725 active cases. There were 14 deaths and 1,102 new positive cases reported over the last 24 hours.
In addition, the DHHR reported five other previously unreported COVID-19 deaths as a result of the Bureau for Public Health's data reconciliation with official death certificates.
The stateâs cumulative positive test rate was at 5.09% on Wednesday. The daily positive test rate decreased from 12.76% Tuesday to 9.45% Wednesday.
COVID-19 recoveries were at 167,145.
Delta variant cases of the coronavirus were at 554.
The stateâs data shows 0.46% of fully vaccinated people in the state have gotten COVID. The data also shows 0.007% of those who are fully vaccinated have died from the virus.
