An Ohio oil trucking company will pay an $11,000 fine for a 1998 spill into a Roane County stream, according to federal
officials yesterday.
BD Oil Gathering Corporation will pay the fine as part of a proposed settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency.
The company was cited for an incident on Dec. 23, 1998, in which a company tank truck backed into an embankment and
released 92 barrels, about 4,000 gallons, of crude oil.
The oil flowed into Big Sandy Creek, which flows into the Elk River.
BD agreed to spend at least $35,000 to create a spill response team. The team is to consist of a truck and driver specifically
equipped to respond to small oil spills, EPA said.
"This will result in a direct environmental benefit for nearby communities," EPA said.
