FRIDAY WV COVID-19 REPORT - 395 NEW CASES, 16 To 23 Age Group Testing Positive, Calhoun Has Eight New Cases

(04/30/2021)
Five COVID-19 deaths were reported on Friday by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources and 395 new positive cases.

The state’s death total from the coronavirus is now at 2,679. Active cases were 7,089.

It appears that Calhoun has eight new cases this week.

Gov. Jim Justic said, “We’ve got a ton, a ton of young people from 16 to 25 who are testing positive.” Justice said during a news conference Friday. “We’ve absolutely got to those people vaccinated.”

West Virginia now has a total of 42.2% of its eligible population fully vaccinated and 53% of the eligible population who have had at least one shot. The goal is to get to 70% of the population who have had at least one shot.

Strangely, there is a slowdown of people getting second shot.

Justice again touted the $100 savings bond incentive he announced previously to all residents 16 to 35 who get a coronavirus vaccination. He said that will apply to everyone who previously received the shot to those who step forward now.

As of data from Thursday, there were 242 people hospitalized with the coronavirus, including 81 in intensive care and 26 people on ventilators.

There have been 587,975 West Virginians become fully vaccinated and 143,360 have recovered from the virus since the pandemic began in 2020.
