MB>Derek Wright and Carl Marks use lights on truck to assist firemen
Dry conditions and gusting winds fanned two brush fires yesterday. A grass fire
quickly spread near the Willard "Pete" Kerby residence on Mount Zion Ridge at 2:30
p.m.
A pumper truck from the Arnoldsburg VFD managed to reach the area, using water to
douse the flames. It burned about two acres.
Last night at 9:30 p.m. the Arnoldsburg VFD responded to a woods fire near
Richardson on the lower West Fork. The fire was across the West Fork in Roane
County near the Randall Whytsell residence.
Firemen crossed the river to access the fire, which had spread up the hill, burning at
least two acres. They were on scene shortly before midnight.
Fire scorched 30 acres in Ritchie County yesterday before it was brought under control by four fire departments.
