Wirt County High School held an assembly yesterday to inform students of Jessica
Lynch's MIA status. Principal Ken Heiney said most students knew that Lynch had
been captured in Iraq by the time they arrived at school.
"It's a small community. News like this moves fast," he said.
Heiney said Lynch was active in the school of about 325 students, where she played
on the basketball and softball teams and was a member of Future Farmers of
America.
"She's a top-notch young lady. Everybody knew Jesse. She was here at
Christmastime visiting with former teachers and friends before she was to leave
again for the Middle East," he said.
Faculty and staff remained at the high school after classes yesterday to make
yellow ribbons for the community.
"The teachers who had Jesse in their classes were really touched by what's
happened," said Heiney. "She was a pleasure to be around. But this is reality. It
really brought the war home."
Heiney said the school is planning a special event for the soldier.
Community members e-mailed The Hur Herald asking for readers to "Keep Jessica in
their prayers." (See additional stories in The Herald)
