TUESDAY WV COVID-19: CASES RISING IN RURAL REGIONAL COUNTIES, STATE REACHING RECORD HIGHS

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) confirmed 226 new COVID-19 cases and 9 additional deaths in its report on Tuesday.

The state site indicates one new case in Calhoun, multiple new cases in Roane, Wirt, Clay and Gilmer.

For the second straight week, West Virginia has set a record for the number of weekly statewide confirmed coronavirus cases as officials continue to urge widespread testing.

Hospitalizations in West Virginia have risen to the highest level during the pandemic.

The 1,644 positive cases reported from Oct. 12 through Sunday shattered the mark of 1,350 cases set in the previous week, according to the Department of Health and Human Resources website.

West Virginia State University officials at Institute said Monday that another individual associated with the school has tested positive for COVID-19.

This marks the 44th positive case the school has reported this fall semester. The positive results include 32 students and 12 employees of the university.

University officials said the majority of those affected have recovered, with only seven cases active.

Putnam school officials say 57 asked to quarantine after two positive COVID-19 tests.

Nine COVID-19 cases confirmed in Kanawha County schools since Sunday.

Ritchie County Schools confirmed one positive COVID-19 student case on Monday involving Ritchie County Middle School.

DHHR reported that as of 10 a.m., October 20, 2020, there have been 690,803 (+3,778) total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 20,519 (+226) total cases and 408 (+9) deaths.

DHHR has confirmed the deaths of a 44-year old female from Cabell County, a 78-year old female from Clay County, an 88-year old female from Ohio County, a 77-year old male from Marshall County, a 71-year old male from Logan County, a 70-year old male from Logan County, a 90-year old female from Harrison County, a 65-year old male from Brooke County, and an 86-year old male from Cabell County.

According to the DHHR’s website, there are currently 5,113 (+18) active cases and 14,988 (+189) recovered cases in the state.
