The Grand Jury of Calhoun County met on September 8, 2020 in Calhoun County. Judge Anita Harold Ashley presided.
After hearing cases presented by Prosecutor Shannon S. Johnson and after due deliberation, the Grand Jury returned the following indictments:
Amanda Kay Conley, 36, was indicted on one count of Breaking and Entering, a Felony, and one count of Grand Larceny, a Felony. The case was investigated by Sgt. C. J. Weekley of the West Virginia State Police.
Burton Copen, 25, was indicted on one count of Possession with Intent to Deliver and Delivery of a Controlled Substance, a Felony; one count of No Insurance, a Misdemeanor; one count of Driving Without a License, first offense, a Misdemeanor; one count of Defective Equipment, a Misdemeanor; one count of No Registration, a Misdemeanor; and one count of Operating a Vehicle With an Expired Motor Vehicle Inspection Sticker, a Misdemeanor. This case was investigated by Corporal B. E. Young of the West Virginia State Police
Danny Edward Lane, 58; Shelbie Denise Lane, 53; and David Edward Lane, 20, were indicted on one count of Possession with Intent to Deliver and Delivery of a Controlled Substance, a Felony, and one count of Conspiracy, a Felony. This case was investigated by Corporal B. E. Young of the West Virginia State Police.
An indictment was returned against several individuals related to incidents occurring on May 5, 2020 which was investigated by Cpl. B.E. Young of the West Virginia State Police.
Danny Edward Lane, 58, was indicted on two counts of Kidnapping, both felonies; four counts of Malicious Assault, all felonies; two counts of Assault during the Commission of a Felony, both felonies; and eight counts of Conspiracy, all felonies.
Shelbie Denise Lane, 53, was indicted on one count of Malicious Assault, a felony; and two counts of Conspiracy, both felonies.
Victor Lee Carpenter, Sr., 53, was indicted on two counts of Kidnapping, both felonies; three counts of Malicious Assault, all felonies; two counts of Assault during the Commission of a Felony, both felonies; and six counts of Conspiracy, all felonies.
Jennifer Lynn Love, 44, was indicted on two counts of Kidnapping, both felonies; three counts of Malicious Assault, all felonies; two counts of Assault during the Commission of a Felony, both felonies; six counts of Conspiracy, all felonies; and Brandishing a Deadly Weapon,
a Misdemeanor.
Abbie Darlene Sturms, 52, was indicted on two counts of Kidnapping, both felonies; three counts of Malicious Assault, all felonies; two counts of Assault during the Commission of a Felony, both felonies; and six counts of Conspiracy, all felonies.
Danny Edward Lane, 20, was indicted on one count of Malicious Assault, a felony; and two counts of Conspiracy, both felonies.
A separate indicted was returned against Victor Lee Carpenter, Sr., 53, for Operating and Attempt to Operate Clandestine Drug Laboratories, a Felony, and Possession of a Controlled Substance, a Misdemeanor. This case was presented by Cpl. B. E. Young, but was investigated by Cpl. D. C. Moore of the West Virginia State Police.
In addition, another indictment was returned naming the Lane family which surrounds an incident occurring November 27, 2019 and which was investigated by Cpl. B. E. Young of the West Virginia State Police.
Danny Edward Lane, 58, was indicted on one count of Robbery in the First Degree, a felony; one count of Assault during the Commission of a Felony, a felony; one count of Unlawful Assault, a felony; Conspiracy, a felony; and Battery, a misdemeanor.
Shelbie Denise Lane, 53, was indicted on one count of Robbery in the First Degree, a felony; one count of Assault during the Commission of a Felony, a felony; one count of Malicious Assault, a felony; and Conspiracy, a felony.
Danny Edward Lane, 20, was indicted on one count of Robbery in the First Degree, a felony; and Conspiracy, a felony.
David Edward Lane, 20, was indicted on one count of Robbery in the First Degree, a felony; and Conspiracy, a felony.
Phillip Dale Marks, 43, was indicted on one count of Driving revoked for DUI, Third Offense, a Felony; one count of No Insurance, a Misdemeanor; one count of Driving an ATV on a Lined Road, a Misdemeanor; and one count of Driving an ATV Exceeding Twenty Five Miles per Hour, a Misdemeanor. This case was investigated by Deputy Wiley Raines of the Calhoun County Sheriffâs Department.
Joshawa Whipkey, 41, was indicted on two counts of Domestic Battery, third offense, both felonies. This case was investigated by Deputy Wiley Raines of the Calhoun County Sheriffâs Department.
Indictments returned against individuals are merely charges at this time and are not indications of guilt. All the above Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
