UPDATE - Clay County officials said it was a false alarm regarding missing kyaker.
UPDATE - Rescue crews in Clay County say they are now unsure if someone was in a kayak that was recovered from the Elk River Sunday.
Clay Volunteer Fire Chief Mike Scott said first responders received reports of a young male in the kayak at one point, but water rescue crews were unable to find anything.
Scott said they are still working to confirm if someone was in the kayak or if it became untied somewhere upstream.
West Virginia State Police has also provided a helicopter in the search.
Crews said high waters in the area from recent rain is making searching in the area difficult.
