WEST VIRGINIA DISASTER DECLARATION APPROVED - Assistance For Damage From Recent Winter Storms

Governor Bob Wise announced yesterday that a Major Disaster Declaration for 33 counties in West Virginia has been approved by President Bush because of the recent severe winter storm.

Wise thanked the President, "For granting a Major Disaster Declaration," "Now is the time for us to repair and rebuild our homes, businesses and public facilities and move forward."

Citizens who suffered damages as a result of this severe winter storm can call Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to apply for assistance, the number is 1-800-621-3362. Citizens in Cabell, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Mingo, Roane and Wayne counties can apply for assistance through the Individuals and Households Program (IHP). IHP assistance offers eligible applicants grants for housing assistance, medical, dental and/or funeral costs, transportation costs, unemployment benefits, crisis counseling and other disaster related costs.

Some counties were granted more than one type of assistance.

Braxton, Cabell, Calhoun, Clay, Gilmer, Greenbrier, Jackson, Lewis, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Monroe, Nicholas, Putnam, Raleigh, Roane, Upshur, Wayne, Webster, Wirt and Wyoming counties are now eligible to apply for Public Assistance (PA). PA is designed to help state, county and local governments pay for damage to public property and/or for disaster response overtime for employees. Certain non-profit organizations are also eligible.

Emergency Protective Measures have also been granted in Berkeley, Grant, Hampshire, Jefferson, Mineral, Morgan, Pocahontas and Preston counties. This assistance is designed to help state and local governments with costs associated with snow removal.

Cabell, Kanawha, Lincoln, Mingo and Wayne counties are eligible to apply for assistance under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
