AIR GUARD UNITS HEADED TO MIDDLE EAST - Airlifted From Charleston Yesterday

Huge C-5 transport planes airlifted about 80 members of the 130th Airlift Wing Thursday out of Charleston, along with cargo equipment, to undisclosed points in the Middle East. A total of 300 Air National Guard members from the Charleston area will have been called up.

They are joining the several thousand West Virginia Army Reservists and National Guard members who have been deployed for the pending war.

Capt. David Lester, public affairs officer for the 130th. said "We don't know how many more troops may be called up later."

The Air Force's Air Mobility Command at Yeager Airport is to provde combat-ready military units to any point in the world on short notice.

The C-5s can carry a payload of 270,000 pounds for more than 2,100 miles at speeds of more than 500 miles per hour without refueling. The giant planes are 247 feet long, with a wingspan of 223 feet and are one of the largest aircraft in the world.
