We recall the tales of Bear Fork this weekend on the Hur Herald Saturday and Sunday, a huge tract of land once owned by the historic Bennett Family of Lewis County, which once could have been spread over 35,000 acres in Calhoun, Braxton and Gilmer County.
What tales the wilderness woods could tell, murders, robberies, buried treasure to the subsistence of dozens of families who lived in the deep woods without ownership, some for three generations.
While the acreage has diminished to about 14,000 acres, still wild and woolly with some primitive trees, much has been leased to the Bear Fork Hunting Club for many years. |
