Thin layers of ice and snow on the roads caused dozens of wrecks, closed parts of Interstate 64 and kept emergency crews busy this morning in the region.
The surprise weather caused many Calhoun roads to be slick and hazardous.
Calhoun Schools opened after a two-hour delay, with snow and ice melting by mid-morning.
Sheriff Allen Parsons got an early morning start checking incidents related to the weather.
A car and a truck belonging to Asplund Tree Trimming, collided on Route 16 near the mouth of Crummies Creek at 8:30 a.m. with Arnoldsburg VFD and Calhoun EMS responding. At least one person was taken to Roane General Hospital.
A car rolled on its side on Millstone Hill about 6 a.m., with no apparent injury, and a car slid into the guardrail on Barr Bill, Rt. 16 south of Grantsville.
Unrelated to the weather, a car went of of control near Baker's Mart just south of Grantsville at 7 p.m. The driver was not taken to the hospital.Calhoun EMS and the Grantsville VFD responded.
Forecast for today says there will be a chance of showers in the afternoon with temperatures reaching 55-60 degrees.
