The latest unemployment numbers for West Virginia shows Calhoun leading the state. Only Mingo County had more.
Calhoun has an unemployment rate of 23.6%
Historically, over 25 years, Calhoun has had one of highest unemployment rates in WV, generally during the winter months when oil and gas field and construction workers would be laid-off.
Now those workers are on the unemployment list for April, mostly due to a slow down of natural gas work and COVID-19.
The unemployment list is based on those currently drawing unemployment, a decades long system that does not include the unemployed no longer able to get benefits.
