West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice announced Tuesday that children in West Virginia will not return to in-person classes for the rest of the school year.
âWe are not going to be able to go back to school in buildings that exist now,â Justice said Tuesday during a news conference.
Justice urged school systems across the state to continue distance learning alternatives and to feed children.
He also urged all schools to find a place where seniors could still walk across the stage and receive their diplomas and recognition.
Clayton Burch, state superintendent of schools, said the state Department of Education has a task force to help with graduations.
The governor said that students will "definitely be back in school next year and hopefully we will be way past this and this will be a memory in our rear-view mirror."
In other matters, Justice said WorkForce West Virginia processed 12,000 claims Monday and are completely on track to have the entire backlog done by Wednesday night.
Justice said self-employed workers and independent contractors and workers who do not have work history can apply for unemployment benefits as of 10 p.m. Friday night.
