Some West Virginia hospitals and some first responders will be receiving $1.3 million worth of personal protective equipment that was purchased by the Hazel Ruby McQuain Charitable Trust.
The purchase, coordinated through the West Virginia University Health System, includes more than 1.1 million procedural masks, more than 163,000 surgical masks, more than 116,000 N95 respirators, more than 290,000 disposable gowns, more than 29,000 pairs of protective eyewear (goggles and glasses), and 40,000 disposable suits.
A news release posted on the West Virginia University Foundationâs website said recipients of the personal protective equipment will include the hospitals of WVU Medicine, Monongalia EMS, Roane General Hospital, Wheeling Hospital, Princeton Community Hospital, Davis Health System, Minnie Hamilton Health System, Weirton Medical Center, Thomas Health System, Boone Memorial Hospital, and Mountain Health System.
"Now, more than ever, is the time for those who can help to step forward to help our hospitals and first responders during the COVID-19 crisis," said Stephen Farmer, the chairman of the Ruby McQuain Trust Board of Trustees.
Hospitals across the United States, including those in West Virginia, are all working feverishly to obtain critical personal protective equipment to ensure they are able to protect their providers and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The news release said West Virginia hospitals are also managing significant challenges during this pandemic because they have provided nearly $1 billion in unreimbursed or uncompensated care to victims of the opioid crisis in the last five years.
