GOVERNOR ORDERS ALL W.VA. SCHOOLS CLOSED BEGINNING MONDAY

(03/15/2020)

Gov. Jim Justice has ordered that beginning Monday, March 16, all public schools across West Virginia will be closed indefinitely due to the risk of coronavirus.

Although no known cases of coronavirus have been reported in the state, the governor said it is likely there are already cases since all bordering states have reported cases.

The governor did not specify what the plan is for feeding children who rely on free meals, but in a press release, Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin said federal officials will be working through the weekend to finalize plans. Manchin said the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved a waiver that allows West Virginia to be reimbursed for the meals provided to students in the case of school closures.

Health officials are also working to ensure that residents across the state who show symptoms are able to be tested for the disease.
