CALHOUN OFFICIALLY A 2ND AMENDMENT SANCTUARY COUNTY

(02/12/2020)

Calhoun County Commissioners voted unanimously at today's meeting to approve the county a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary.

Sheriff Jeff Starcher said several County citizens have approached him and requested his support to designate Calhoun a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary. Sheriff Starcher stated he drafted and submitted the proposal to the Commission on January 27, 2020.

In the letter Sheriff Starcher wrote to the Commission, he stated, "The intent of this request is to reaffirm the rights of all law-abiding citizens of Calhoun County to keep and bear arms as constitutionally is protected.

This type of resolution has been defined as symbolic because a citizen's right to bear arms is already protected by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, and Article III of the West Virginia Constitution."

Sheriff Starcher (right) further stated, "I took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America, as well as the Constitution of the State of West Virginia, and that is exactly what I intend to do."
