The volunteers of the First Baptist Calhoun Food Panty often assemble in the parking lot of the pantry, located just east of Grantsville on Route 5, and have some quiet moments of prayer and meditation for families and children who suffer from hunger in Calhoun.

"Those numbers go up with the newly unemployed," said co-manager Donna Umstead, indicating that most families live from paycheck-paycheck.

The pantry serves up to 600 families a month.

Co-manager Lewis Craddock says Calhoun churches, civic groups and individuals generously contribute to keep the longtime project going. The co-chairs also generously donate to the project.

Most of the food comes from Mountaineer Food Pantry, with food also being donated by Foodland, Tudors and Walmart.

Umstead said the project is supported by 12-15 active volunteers from young to old, including students from the Little Kanawha Christian School.

"The dedicated volunteers are a life-send to the pantry," said Umstead.

They prepare 65 food back packs to Pleasant Hill and deliver food to the handicapped and elderly.

The pantry is open for pick-up two days a week, Tuesday and Thursday, 11 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Once a month there is a Truck Give-Away day from 11:00 to 1 p.m. Check Hur Herald for those scheduled days.

Umstead continued to verify the pantry is a lifeline to many Calhoun families in need.

Support donations can be made to First Baptist Church Calhoun Food Pantry, 1500 East Little Kanawha Highway, Grantsville WV 26147.
