CALHOUN PROSECUTOR GIVES 2019 YEAR END REPORT - 69% Increase Felony Cases

(01/10/2020)
The Calhoun County Prosecutor Shannon Johnson has released the year end case numbers for Calhoun County for 2019.

Johnson said there were 44 felony cases processed through Circuit Court and 597 misdemeanor cases filed in Calhoun County Magistrate Court.

This represents a 69% increase in felony cases and a 53% increase in misdemeanor cases handled by the staff of one full time prosecutor and one full time secretary.

In addition, the Prosecutor’s Office handled 38 abuse and neglect cases, 5 juvenile status offender cases, and 12 juvenile delinquency petitions in Circuit Court.

Prosecutor Johnson spent time in two felony jury trials over the year. She also held meetings at the middle/high school aimed at preventing the need for filing juvenile petitions on eight different days as part of the pre-petition diversion program started by her office, the Probation Officer, the WV DHHR, and the school.

Prosecutor Johnson also noted that she was in court an average of 15 days per month. On average, there are only 20.5 business days per month.
