Calhoun Sheriff Jeff Starcher - "We
take drug interdiction very seriously"
The drug epidemic is alive and well in West Virginia and in Calhoun County. A considerable number Calhoun residents suffer from the disease of addiction.
According to Sheriff Jeff Starcher, the drug epidemic has seemed to have played a major role in other crimes, such as property crimes like burglaries and other larcenies.
Sheriff Starcher stated that to date, the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office has answered in excess of 600 calls for service, excluding traffic stops, according to data obtained from Calhoun County E-911.
The sheriff indicated that the drug epidemic has possibly played a role in such a high number of calls so far this year. He also reported that his office is now tracking and recording drug busts and drug related arrests made in the county.
"Since we started tracking and recording drug related offenses this year, the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office has made, or has been directly involved in, a total of 19 drug busts in Calhoun County", Starcher said.
Sheriff Starcher said that a benefit of recording drug related offenses is that the department can track the drug busts, and pin-point "hot spots" for drug activity on the county map. "We take drug interdiction very seriously," he said.
Recently, the Circuit Court of Calhoun County awarded the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office a total of $3,214 in seized drug money that involved a drug investigation that the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office was directly involved with.
The sheriff stated that his department has a "comprehensive, three-phase plan" to combat the drug epidemic in Calhoun County.
The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office encourages all those who suffer from addiction to seek treatment, and turn their lives around.
