There will be a benefit auction Saturday March 1 starting at 6 P. M. at the Creston Community Building, weather
permitting. There will be all sorts of goodies, grab bags, 50/50, etc. It was noted that, although the social security checks
will not come in 'til Monday, checks written at the auction won't be deposited until then. Proceeds go to maintain the
building. Everyone is invited.
There will be a sing Saturday March 8, starting at 7 P. M. at the Creston Community Building. All singers, musicians and
the public are invited. Singers are urged to contact Donna Sue at 275-3202. Everyone is welcome.
The regular meeting of the Creston Community organization will be held Tuesday, March 4 at 7 P. M. at the Community
Building. Because of weather, certain items are behind schedule.
There was rain, snow and then inches of ice. Roads became treacherous because of the ice and a lack of salt. Trees fell
and blocked many roads. The damage to standing timber in some areas is severe. Then there was thunder and lightening
and a deluge. Presently, many roads in the Creston area are deep under water although the river finally crested.
Chancy, Mary, Tusky and Pat Shaw, Denver & Tammy and Rodney Lynch cleared the road from Creston to Beaver Dam
and scraped off the snow and ice. A crew started up the Boice Hill from Larry Webster's driveway with Terry Grim on the
road grader and timber cutters but the going was slow. It took all day to get to the top of the hill. The same was the case all
over the county.
The folks who work at the road garage would like to thank all who worked to clear fallen trees, especially the Fire
Department. They put in 600 hours removing trees, freeing state road equipment, etc. Even the county seat was without
electric but Helen & the folks over at Mike's Place fetched in soup, chili and pies for the workmen at the highway
department. The global warming people apparently are still in Baghdad waiting the catch jars of "Whoopass" that are going
to be tossed Saddam's way.
While the Creston area, for the most part has electricity again, other sections are having to live like they did before the
modern convenience was installed. Of course the trouble is now folks rely on water pumps and heating and cooking stoves
that require electric to work. New gas cook stoves can be purchased that do not require electric for the oven and, of
course, wood stoves and fireplaces require no electric.
Mr. & Mrs. Albert "Bub" Ferrell & sons were calling on Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ferrell & Amy.
Jeff McFee had a job offer he couldn't refuse so he moved to Iowa. Someone noted that there was a damsel out there.
"The Balloon Lady" made inquiry as to the "status" of Mr. Dexterity. After a brief explanation she stated, "Well then, he is
available!"
The folks down at the Mouth of Elk River have been very busy, it seems. "Resolution" of the Workmen's Comp. Mess and
the liability insurance fiasco will, apparently, be done 'in conference committee'. Unfortunately, this may mean that only lip
service will be done and the state can continue to flounder as special interests prosper. It was noted that some/many in
"leadership" positions look forward to relocating with "the beautiful people" in Chevy Chase, Bethesda, Key Biscayne,
Myrtle Beach, etc. and thus do not really have the long term interest of the state and its citizens in mind. Some down there
would have us believe that more gambling would solve the state's woes. They are likely the same group that would
encourage the building of "houses" so "our daughters" could "find work".
SB 249 and HB 2653 will do away with the right of surface owners to object to the sighting of deep wells on their
property. It was understood that this bill was "well oiled" by the fat cats. This would seem to indicate that lots and lots of
deep drilling is planned and someone wants to 'doze the gardens, meadows and houses out of the way. Of course, with
directional drilling which is routine in deep wells, the location can be moved to a convenient location but such seems to be a
well guarded secret.
The price of local Penn grade crude fell $1.25/bbl to $31.50. Allegheny Power indicated that they wanted to purchase
more natural gas in the area. However, the talk on the patch is that the natural gas end of their business has been sold
because of the parent company's severe financial woes. Currently, they buy some natural gas for 20 cents/MCF and then
sell the same for $8 or more.
Danny Radcliffe suffered a heart attack and had to be taken by FWD ambulance from his residence on the Umstead. Deep
snow, ice and mud have made many roads difficult to travel. That is, of course, after all the trees were removed.
Josemite Sam Dawson, C. Romeo Griffin, Jr. and Rick McClead were among those hired to help cut timber out of the
roadways. One fellow suffered a broken collar bone while working with "Pudge" Hickman.
As they say, "A rose is a rose is a rose . . . ."
John Morris, who lives up on Stinson, noted that one of his cows had her calf early. He said he would call the calf "Lucky"
since it didn't fall in the creek and drown and was not hit by falling timber during the ice storm. John noted that he had a lot
more pasture now as he no longer had any timber.
Russ Richardson, a consulting forester, noted that folks should check their woodlots for ice damage as some may qualify for
special tax treatment. Landowners are urged to contact Woodland Owners of W. Va. at www.woaofwv.org for
guidance.
Lots of folks are looking for hay. Freddy Frye, a prominent Lincoln County resident, was in Creston recently obtaining
hay.
The 2003 prom and pageant style show will be held Sunday, March 2 at the WVUP Activities Center at 2 P. M. There
will be a $5 admission charge. The show will benefit the Wirt County after prom and graduation alcohol free parties. There
will be many door prizes including $200 off a prom gown, dinners, flowers, shoes, jewelry, hair dos, nails, work overs, etc.
