Rainfall stopped in the nick of time early Sunday morning, preventing major flooding
in the region. The Little Kanawha River went out of banks along Route 5 from
Glenville to Grantsville and downstream before noon, and then began to recede.
Grantsville resident Roger Jarvis, whose house was at risk for flooding, said the river
was coming up 3-4 inches an hour at 3 a.m.
More severe flooding was experienced in Glenville. (See Glenville and Wirt flood
photos on The Herald)
The Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department continued their around the clock work in
assisting a few individuals and families to evacuate their homes. The Senior Center
in Grantsville was opened for those displaced by the water.
Yesterday's flooding could be a climax to two weeks of severe weather that struck
the region. Calhoun and Roane County have been among the hardest hit, according
to the National Weather Service.
However, more snow is predicted today.
