GLENVILLE STATE GETS $3 MILLION - Federal Funds For Improvements

(02/23/2003)
Glenville State College will get nearly three million dollars in the new federal budget to build a Community Education Center.

The college has been under the ax for closure.

President Bush signed a nearly 400 billion-dollar spending bill late yesterday for the budget year that began October First. The two-point-seven million dollars it contains for Glenville were inserted by Senator Robert C. Byrd and Congressman Alan Mollohan.

Mollohan says Glenville State is indispensable to the continued development of central West Virginia. Byrd agrees, saying Glenville fills an important niche for the ten-county area it serves.

Glenville plans to renovate and expand its student center, built in 1956, to add a high-tech classroom and community gathering areas where health and wellness programs could be offered.

Glenville President Thomas Powell says recruiting has suffered under persistent rumors that his college is one of two that lawmakers intend to close or privatize by 2007.
