Roy D. Cooper, 88 of Parkersburg departed this life on May 29, 2019 at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.
He was born in Buckhannon, WV on January 12, 1931 the son of the late Asa V. Cooper and Reta P. Douglas Cooper.
He was assigned to the 7th Infantry Division in Korea from September 1954 to September 1956, and then served with the U.S. Army Reserve and West Virginia Army National Guard with over 37 years of total service to his country.
He also was a school teacher specializing in Mathematics for 36 years at Spencer, Williamstown and Edison Middle Schools.
He belonged to several organizations working in several positions with the VFW Post 1212, Department of Army Veterans, Fort Neal Kiwanis Club, South Parkersburg Jaycees, and the Boy Scout Troops 16 and 17. He enjoyed coin collecting, stamp collecting, playing cards and was an avid storyteller, specifically jokes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years to Linda L. (Martin) Cooper, three sons Doug (Aleta) Cooper of Vienna, WV, Gary (Rhonda) Cooper of Washington, WV, Mike (Lora) Cooper of Elizabeth, WV and one daughter Beth Cooper Josephi (Jeff) of Charleston, WV. Roy has 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Asa V. Cooper and Reta P. (Douglas) Cooper, his sister Mary L. (Cooper) Garrett and his brother John Cooper.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg with Evangelist Randy Yerby officiating. Burial will be in the West Virginia National Cemetery at Grafton, WV, 2:30 p.m. Visitation will be Monday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg and Tuesday at the Leavitt Funeral Home one hour prior to the service.
