A Peace Gathering will be held in front of the courthouse in Spencer this Saturday at
11 a.m. by the Roane-Calhoun Peace Coalition.
The principal speaker will be Charleston resident Rev. Jim Lewis, who served in the
Marine Corps from 1958-61. Lewis has dedicated his life to social causes and the
underprivileged, and was featured in a Mike Wallace interview on 60 Minutes. Lewis
has co-founded the West Virginia Patriots for Peace.
"Many people in West Virginia do not believe the Bush administration has proven
Iraq represents an imminent threat to the United States," said Sarah Hotchkiss, one
of the organizers.
"We do not see how unleashing our military might on impoverished Iraq will make
our country safer from terrorists attacks," she said, but it is likely to unleash more
animosity toward the United States.
The organizers said "We are asking people, young and old, to join us for the Peace
Gathering. "Bring your American Flags," they said.
Also speaking at the gathering will be Sister Jane Francis, a former Roane County
resident; former Calhoun Commissioner and Vietnam veteran Larry Cottrell; Calhoun
resident Carl Shaw, a retired U. S. Army veteran, and Vivian Stockman,
communications coordinator for the Ohio Valley Environmental Council.
The event is expected to last about one hour and will include performances by the
Calhoun County Kitchen Band and Jude Binder.
