CLAY WOMAN SENTENCED FOR MURDER - Killed Charleston Woman For Dollars

(02/08/2003)
A former Clay County woman Lena Lynn Peek has pleaded guilty in Charleston to first-degree murder for fatally stabbing a blind woman last spring, then stealing a few dollars from her home.

Peek, 35, told Kanawha Circuit Judge Duke Bloom that she went to Effie McClanahan's front door to ask for a cup of sugar last March.

When the 72-year-old returned with the cup of brown sugar, Peek apparently stabbed her.

Bloom sentenced Peek to life in prison with mercy. She will be eligible for parole in 15 years.

McClanahan, a vendor at the state Department of Health and Human Resources vending stands, was found after she failed to show up for work.

In 1993, Peek, then a Bomont, Clay County resident, was charged with trying to sell her 1-month-old baby for $1,400.

State Police set up a sting and undercover troopers purchased the child from her before making the arrest after Peek's mother alerted them.

She said she needed the money to buy a mobile home.

Peek reportedly has five children, ages, 15, 14, 13, 12 and 10.
