TAX REVENUES WAY OFF - Decline In Sales, Jobs And Wages

(02/04/2003)
The West Virginia Tax Department says it will end the fiscal year at least $30 million below estimates in tax collection. Monthly collections have been about $4 million off. Retail taxes are drastically down, also indicating a decline in wages and job scarcity.

Mark Muchow, a tax expert working for the state, says January's personal income tax collections were helped by a $10 million withholding from the Powerball winnings of Jack Whittaker, while other personal income tax collections were still off for the month.

Gov. Wise has predicted a budget shortfall in excess of $200 million, while other government watchers expect it to be much higher. The state is reducing most budgets nearly 14%.
