| Virginia Joan Stone, 95, of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, formerly of Spencer, West Virginia, died Thursday, November 22, 2018, in Wilmington, N.C.
She was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, one of five children of Joseph J. Cronin and Katherine Magner Cronin. Virginia met her husband, John W. Stone, in Boston during World War II. They lived in Looneyville and Spencer for over 50 years. They retired to Wrightsville Beach NC.
Virginia was a homemaker and loving mother to four children. Over the years, she was active in church, school and community projects including being a founding member of Hold Redeemer Catholic Church. She and her husband were avid Mountaineer fans even after moving to North Carolina.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, John W. Sone, and a daughter Kathryn Criss Stone. She is survived by three children, John W. Stone, Jr. and his wife Gail of Spencer, W.Va., Patricia A. Johnston and her husband John of Wilmington, N.C. and Mary Susan Holland and her husband Rick of Arlington, Va. She is survived by five grandchildren, Chris Stone, Frank Stone, Michelle Stone Reyes, Kathryn Johnston Wandling and Zachary Stone Holland, and her great grandson, Kelly Johnston Wandling. She is also survived by one sister, JoAnn Cronin of Wrentham, Mass.
A memorial mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 7 at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Spencer. Visitation will be at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer on Thursday, December 6 from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to Holy Redeemer Catholic Church or the Roane General Hospital Foundation.
