A Sutton man has been charged with murder after West Virginia State Police said he admitted to shooting his wife.
John Homer Carroll Jr., 56, is charged with second-degree murder, a news release from State Police said.
Braxton 911 received a call about 9 p.m. Monday from Carroll stating he had shot his wife about 30 minutes prior to making the call, the release said. Carroll's son also called 911 saying he heard gunshots coming from his father's home.
State Police and Braxton County sheriff's deputies responded to the home on Bug Ridge Road. Carroll walked toward the officers as he carried a rifle, the release said.
After officers ordered him to drop his weapon and show his hands, Carroll fired multiple shots at the officers. Officers shot back at the suspect, and Carroll ran into a ditch. State Police said Carroll surrendered his rifle and a pistol and threw them onto the road.
Carroll was taken into custody and then treated for a grazing gunshot wound to the side.
No officers were injured.
Carroll is currently being held in Central Regional Jail without bond.
