Captain Billy J. "Bill" White, 88, Virginia Beach VA, U.S. Navy retired,
died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of
the late Ola and Lorena White, and was a veteran of
the Korean and Vietnam wars. He enlisted as a Seaman
Recruit in 1948, advanced to Chief Petty Ofcer, and
commissioned Ensign in 1955. He served on six major
staffs and nine ships. He was commanding ofcer of
USS Nipmuc ATF-157, USS Brister DER-327, USS
Keith DD775 and USS Ellison DD-864. He was
awarded a BS degree by Navy Postgraduate School
and a MS degree by George Washington University.
After retiring from the Navy in 1979, he was employed
by Vitro Corp., a system engineering and software
company, as a senior system engineer and the Hampton
Roads Dept. He retired from Vitro in 1992. He
served Thalia United Methodist Church for 45 years as
a council member, nance committee member, nance
steward chairman, auditor, and usher. He was past
member and president of Make-A-Wish Foundation
of Eastern Virginia, past volunteer for 22 years at the
Navy Retired Activities ofce, and past board member
of Larksburg Civic League, Atlantic Fleet Credit
Union, and Bank @LANTEC.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Frances; one
daughter, Brenda; one son, Stephen and wife Carol;
two granddaughters, Catherine White and Elizabeth
Phelps; three sisters, Dorothy Howard, Gwen
Ritchie and Judith McGrath; and special friend, Ann
Wilkinson.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Millie
Hayhurst and Madeline Kight.
Memorial service was held at Thalia U.M.
