BERNARD L. ROBERTS, Charleston, Former Rosedale | (01/28/2003) | Bernard L. Roberts, 93, of Charleston died Jan. 26, 2003, in the VA Medical
Center, Clarksburg.
He was born June 14, 1909, in Rosedale, a son of the late Dr. Luther E. and
Mamie Stump Roberts. He was also preceded in death by two brothers,
Garland and Jerry Roberts.
He was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, Stumptown, and was
retired from the West Virginia Department of Human Services. A Navy
veteran, he received a commendation from the U.S. Navy for saving the
steamship James Buchanan when ammunition began exploding on the docks
as Noumea, New Caledonia, in the South Pacific during World War II. He
loved the hills of West Virginia, hunting, fishing and ginsenging well into his
80s, and was an avid reader.
He was married to Myrtle McCartney Roberts, who survives him.
He is also survived by two sons, Patrick of Sutton, Garland of Belleville; four
daughters, Susan Bennett of Craigsville, Sharon Wiseman of Washington,
Sandra Rentschler of Grantsville, Jill Roberts of Tucson, Ariz.; 10
grandchildren, Derek and Kami Bennett, Kristy Langley, Kara and Lynsey
Wiseman and Melissa, Waylan, Jesse, Zachary and Shannon Roberts; five
great-grandchildren, Matthew, Caleb and Seth Bennett and Chad and Aric
Langley.
Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Mount Pisgah Baptist
Church, Stumptown.
Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Parkersburg, is in charge of arrangements.
