From Calhoun County Historical and Genealogy Society
Work is continuing on the restoration of the Stump Hotel and upgrading of the former Quality Shop in downtown Grantsville,
West Virginia.
Research and documentation of existing building conditions has been ongoing over the past several months. The Calhoun
County Historical and Genealogy Society has met periodically with representatives of the SEM Architects and the Vandalia
Heritage Foundation (which is providing technical assistance), to review the progress of the of the work.
Funding for the project was obtained by Congressman Alan B, Mollohan (1st. WV District) through a previous
appropriations bill for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The former Quality Shop building will be renovated to provide a state-of-the-art headquarters for the Calhoun County
Historical and Genealogy Society. Improvements will include such items as fire safety, mechanical and electric upgrades, and
improvements to display and meeting areas. Additional work scope includes handicapped rest room facilities, a new mini
kitchen area, and new display and lighting for the Society's exhibits.
Work on the former Stump Hotel will focus on the building's exterior. The facility will receive a new roof with copper gutters
and down spouts. Other improvements include a complete restoration of the building's exterior siding and all doors and
windows, with the exterior being to its original appearance. This will include rebuilding and restoring the four columns at the
front entrance, rebuilding the front balcony with period detailing and removal of non original items such as the exterior metal
stairs.
