DOCTORS SUPPORT HOUSE BILL - Want Caps And Limits On Damage And Lawsuits

(01/27/2003)
West Virginia doctors are in support of a bill passed by the House of Delegates which addresses high medical malpractice insurance premiums.

About 150 doctors from around the state met Sunday at Flatwoods, Braxton County to organize plans for the remainder of the legislative session. Doctors say they want more input in how a proposed physicians' mutual plan is designed.

West Virginia Medical Association president, Doctor Douglas E. McKinney says his organization's top objective is persuading the Legislature to pass laws capping damage awards and lawsuit limits. He says the House bill has everything the doctors ask for.

The Medical Association has not been contacted to help with the proposed physicians' mutual insurance plan, he says. McKinney says surgeon walkouts were not discussed at the meeting, although Northern Panhandle and Elkins doctors did walkout for a short time earlier this month.
