State mining officials will unveil proposed changes to regulations on valley fill
construction at two meetings next week.
The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection will explain the proposals to the
public and the flood investigation advisory committee on January 21st. at the agency's Hansford St.
office in Charleston.
The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. in the downstairs conference room.
Those who can't make Tuesday's meeting can join Division of Mining and Reclamation staff in
the Nitro office at 3 p.m. on January 22nd.
Division of Mining and Reclamation Director Matthew Crum says the meetings are to discuss
bottom-up construction of valley fills.
"We want to take the time to brief the public and the regulated industry about how valley
fill construction could change and explain the logistics of bottom-up construction," said
Crum.
In the coming weeks, the DEP will present the proposal to state legislators. The proposed
regulations are a result of a year long study of the effects of mining and timbering
operations on flooding.
