RUSS RICHARDSON: CALHOUN TURTLE DAYS

(04/18/2021)
By Forester Russ Richardson

Turtles are on the move everywhere in the Calhoun woods this week with box turtles crossing busy roads on cool mornings. Most drivers swerve to miss them making it look easy for snakes who often tend to be on the other end of an intentional swerve.

As the first days of summer get closer snapping turtles are hatching. These little snappers are just about the size of a bottle cap and their shells were still soft and the claws were almost translucent enough to see though.

It is hard to believe that this guy might get big enough to catch a duckling or slow frog.

The recently opened shells of snapping turtle eggs are often found on the edges of garden plots in sandy bottoms.
