MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Health care executive W. Don Smith II, 60, of Myrtle Beach, formerly of Huntington and Spencer, died Jan. 12, in Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, after a short illness.
He had a 35-year career as a successful senior executive in the health care industry. He retired as president and chief executive officer from Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, was administrator of Summersville Memorial Hospital, Summersville, W.Va., from 1976 to 1987 and was assistant administrator and chief financial officer for Roane General Hospital, Spencer, W.Va., from 1973 to 1976. He performed administrative service at both the Air Force Academy Hospital in Colorado and the Air Force Regional Hospital at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas.
He attended First Presbyterian Church, Myrtle Beach, and was a member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, Huntington, where he served as moderator and vice chair, and then chair of a $2.5 million remodeling program for the church.
He graduate from Spencer High School in 1960, earned his bachelor of science degree from West Virginia University in 1964 and earned a degree from the United States Air Force in medical administration in 1967.
He was a diplomat in the American College of Health Care Executives, and a member of the American Hospital Association, the Health Care Financial Management Association, Voluntary Hospitals of American Board of Directors for the Mid-Atlantic/Central Atlantic Region, the West Virginia Hospital Association, the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nursing, the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce, HealthNet Aeromedical Board of Directors, Lincoln Primary Care Center Board of Directors, the Western West Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Huntington Municipal Development Authority, the Huntington Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Society of Yeager Scholars Board of Directors and the United Way of the River Cities.
He was preceded in death by his father, Waitman Don Smith of Spencer, W.Va.
Surviving are his mother, Dorothea of Spencer; his wife, Connie Tanner; three children, Kimberly Giacomo and husband, Tony, of Atlanta, Ga., Ryan of Hanford, Calif., Mark of Atlanta; two grandchildren, Cristine and James Giacomo.
Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, Myrtle Beach, S.C., with the Rev. Robert C. Wilkes officiating. Entombment will take place in Hillcrest Cemetery Mausoleum, Conway, S.C.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, Huntington, with the Rev. Hubert Harvey officiating.
The family will receive friends two hours prior to the memorial service at Smith Hall of the church.
