West Virginia health care authorities have begun tallying the number of workers to be vaccinated against smallpox.
The Mid-Ohio Valley Department of Health explained the vaccination program to the Calhoun Commission last
Monday.
The plan is to begin vaccinating health care workers, including some hospital workers and EMS personnel, in preparation for
potential biological weapons attacks.
The first wave of about 450-thousand voluntary vaccinations will begin around the nation about February 1.
Rough estimates of the number of West Virginia health care workers volunteering for vaccination were due to the state
yesterday.
The state was divided into seven regions, local health departments and hospitals have been asked to work together.
But many health care workers and officials are struggling with some concerns, including the possibility of rare but potentially serious side effects. Officials say that one to three people per million could die.
