Charleston WV has a glittering golden dome over its state Capitol, but it does not get exactly a shining review in the ranking of best state capitals in which to live.
The personal-finance website WalletHub ranks Charleston as No. 43 on the 2018 Best State Capitals to Live in. Charleston ranked 18th for affordability, 31st in economic well-being, 46th in quality of education and health and dead last - 50th for quality of life.
WalletHub compared state capitals using 51 key indicators of affordability, economic strength, quality of education and health and overall living standards.
Ranked below Charleston are Baton Rouge, La., 44th; Carson City, Nev.; Providence, R.I., 46th; Montgomery, Ala., 47th; Jackson, Miss., 48th; Hartford, Conn., 49th; and Trenton, N.J., 50th.
The top three state capitals in the survey are Austin, Texas, No. 1; Madison, Wisc., No. 2; and Boise, Idaho, No. 3.
