CALHOUN MAN ARRESTED FOR JETT MURDER - "Done Some Real Bad Things"

(01/08/2003)
A Calhoun County man was arrested early Wednesday morning for the brutal murder of an elderly Clendenin man. Roger Eric Jones, 30, was arrested by police on Walker Road near State Route 16 for the beating death of Oral "Sam" Jett, 83 on Saturday, January 4th. Jett's body was discovered beside his car in a rural area near Amma in Roane County.

The warrant, obtained by the Roane County Sheriff's Department, says Jones told his mother, Sue Jones "He had done some real bad things .... God couldn't forgive him .... that he had done crossed over."

Chief Deputy Jeff Smith obtained much of the information in the case from informants. The arrest document says Jones told family members he "done it two or three times," which they took to mean killing.

There is some speculation Jones could have been involved the the death of John Moorehead, who died of blunt force trauma to the head a few days before. Moorehead's body was found in his burning mobile home on Arnoldsburg Road near the Calhoun-Roane line.

Roane County Sheriff Todd Cole reported Jones has confessed to the murder, indicating a motive of robbery.

Calhoun Magistrate Teresa Robinson video arraigned Jones, who has been charged with murder in Spencer, and has been taken to Central Regional Jail.

Jones was a suspect in a suspicious fire last year on Walker Road, when a residence he had been living in burned to the ground. The Upper West Fork VFW asked for an arson investigation, believing the house was "fire bombed." Calhoun and Roane Magistrate Court records indicate Jones had written multiple worthless checks.
