A Roane County man is in jail after he attacked law enforcement and tried to escape custody.
William Hall, 30, has been charged with battery on a police officer, obstructing, attempting to flee in a vehicle, attempting to flee on foot, attempting to disarm a police officer, possession of marijuana, operating a vehicle under a controlled substance and 3 counts of possession of a controlled substance.
According to the criminal complaint, a trooper found a pickup truck Friday on Route 36 in Spencer on the side of the road with a driver inside who appeared to be slumped over the steering wheel unresponsive.
When the trooper walked up the truck to talk to the man, he saw a rifle magazine in the floor board of the truck.
The trooper asked Hall if there were any weapons inside the vehicle.
That's when troopers say Hall began to reach underneath the front passenger seat.
The trooper ran around to the driver's side window and prevented Hall from taking off in the truck.
According to the criminal complaint, the trooper was able to get into the truck and tried to pull Hall out the vehicle. That's when Hall began to hit the trooper and attempted to exit the truck and take off on foot.
While the struggle was going on Hall attempted to pull the trooper's gun out of his holster.
Hall also pulled the radio away from the trooper, preventing him from calling for backup.
The trooper was able to get control of Hall and place him in custody.
A rifle magazine, marijuana and pills were found inside the truck.
Hall was taken to Central Regional Jail.
