Police have not established a motive in the weekend slaying of an 83-year-old Clendenin man. An investigation surrounding
the victim's impounded car was expected to reveal more information regarding his brutal beating, according to Roane County
Chief Deputy Jeff Smith. .
Oral "Sam" Jett's body was found at the blood-spattered scene along a rural road near Amma in southern Roane County
about 1:00 p.m. Saturday, an area known as Sugar Camp Road.
Witnesses who viewed the scene first thought the man had been shot, saying Jett suffered a wound to the middle of his
forehead and a wound to his back.
Smith said Jett was driving a Chrysler Sebring convertible, which a witness said had body damage and appeared to be stuck
along the highway. The source also said he had an object in his hand, indicating it might have been using it to defend
himself.
Smith was uncertain how long Jett's body had been there, but one local resident said he saw the vehicle along the road about
5 a.m. Saturday.
Jett was a retired self-employed carpenter.
He was the son of the late Edgell W. and Alice Mae Crichfield Jett. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, R.T. and
Opie Jett; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Dawn Patton.
Surviving are daughters, Betty Sloan of Port Washington, Ohio, Peggy Ann Patton of Charleston; sister, Gertie Bevel of
Clendenin; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
