Sidney Smith, 87, of Spencer, died January 7, 2003 in Roane General
Hospital. He was the son of the late Lacy and Ida Sleeth Smith.
He was retired from Columbia Gas in 1975 and was a 50-year member of
Linden Lodge No. 83 A. F. and A. M., the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and
the Beni Kedem Shrine of Charleston. He was a charter member of VFW
Post 5783 of Spencer and attended the Hebron Memorial Church at
Speed.
He was an Army veteran World War II, serving in the 82nd Airborne Division,
fighting in North Africa, Italy, Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He
received the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mildred Clark Smith; a sister, Nadene
Taylor of Ocoee FL.
He was also preceded in death by sisters, Lucille Shuman, Azelene Smith
and Flo Hersman.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 8 at 11 a.m. in the
John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Pastor Mike King officiating. Burial in
Clover Cemetery. Visitation 2-8 p.m. Tuesday.
