A Tennessee man was shot four times by a State Police Trooper on an Interstate 64/77 ramp, according to police
spokesperson Jay Powers.
Charles R. Wyatt was shot Sunday morning after being accused of running his car through three tollbooths on the West
Virginia Turnpike.
The trooper spotted Wyatt's car just north of the Yeager Bridge in Charleston and tried to chase after it. When he pulled
onto the road, the trooper had lost site of Wyatt's car, according to spokesperson Powers. While searching for the car, the
trooper did not turn on his siren or lights.
The trooper pulled off at exit 97 to see if Wyatt had pulled off the road, when he saw Wyatt's car was involved in an
accident and he was trying to open the door to the other car involved in the crash. The trooper approached him to take
him into custody and Wyatt resisted. During the altercation, the trooper shot Wyatt four times.
Police would not reveal whether Wyatt was armed or why he went through the tollbooths.
"We know the answers to a lot of this but due to evidentiary reasons we can't release a lot of information," said Powers. "We
are not going to try the guy in the media."
Wyatt was in stable condition in Charleston Area Medical Center.
